U.S. gov’t awards $2.4 billion for high-speed rail

In the Pacific Northwest, hundreds of millions will go to improving the rail corridor between Eugene and Seattle and eventually the Canadian border. The primary beneficiaries are actually rail freight companies, not passengers, as very few passengers will be riding these rails. The rail line improvements will reduce the time it takes for freight trains to transit the route.

This is good for the west side as this government subsidy will make their geography more desirable for many kinds of businesses. The impact for Spokane is that this may leave Spokane more isolated, and with less transportation infrastructure relative to the west side.
