The Wall Street Journal has created a “Housing Stress Indicator index” and an interactive map to display information about various metro areas around the country.

Spokane appears to rank in the middle of the pack on the “housing stress” index with more than 30% of mortgage holders spending 30% or more of household income on costs, and 34.5% of the population not working. On the latter measure, in the Tri-cities, 30.2% are not working and in King County 29.9% are not working. In Yakima, 36.8% are not working.
